Shinhi Han PhD, RN

Associate Professor, LaGuardia Community College, CUNY

ShinHi Han, PhD, RN Dr. Han is an Associate Professor in the Health Science Department's Nursing Program at LaGuardia Community College. With over 16 years of extensive clinical experience in various nursing roles, including staff nurse, head nurse, vascular access coordinator, and outcome manager in medical and surgical units and nephrology, Dr. Han brings a wealth of practical knowledge to her teaching. She has taught nursing students for 17 years in both South Korea and the United States. Dr. Han's teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in her clinical and educational background, as well as her cultural heritage. She has taught "Fundamentals of Nursing" and "Medical-Surgical Nursing," with a focus on equipping students with strong theoretical knowledge and ethical principles essential for their future roles as professional nurses. She believes nursing encompasses both knowledge-based science and caring-based ethics, emphasizing the importance of clinical reasoning in resolving patient problems while also prioritizing empathy, cultural competence, and patient-centered care. In addition to teaching, Dr. Han is actively involved in research focusing on health behavior and health literacy among diverse ethnic populations. Her research interests include exploring the impact of acculturation, literacy, attitude, subjective norms, and self-efficacy on health behaviors and health literacy. She has published articles on topics such as physical and depression literacy among Korean Americans and has completed studies on minority students' academic self-efficacy related to acculturation. She also investigated variables such as HPV vaccine literacy, attitudes, self-efficacy, subjective norms, and intention associated with Human Papillomavirus vaccination completion behavior in immigrant college students. These findings may be used to develop intervention programs addressing cultural factors and challenges related to HPV-associated diseases and HPV vaccination on campus. Recently, Dr. Han completed an examination of resilience and self-compassion as protective factors in Post-Traumatic Growth among nurses, aiming to help them better cope with COVID-related stress and burnout. Dr. Han is dedicated to serving her community through various volunteer activities, including annual health fairs, community-based CPR education, and Korean community health seminars. She has also played leadership roles in organizing annual Global Korean Nurses Foundation Nursing Conferences and webinars between 2020 and 2023 and the "3rd OKNA Convention & 5th OKNA General Assembly" in 2019 as Vice President of the Overseas Korean Nurses Association (OKNA). Dr. Han's commitment to advancing nursing education, research, and community engagement reflects her passion for improving healthcare outcomes and addressing cultural factors in healthcare delivery.
